Wagner Machine has been committed to ”working smarter, not harder” for over 40 years, and 2022 was no exception.
Last year, we added some awesome new equipment to our precision machine shop with the goal of enhancing our shop’s capabilities:
- (1) Makino DUO64 wire EDM
- (1) MAM72-35V 5-axis machining center
- (3) DN Solutions PUMA 2100SY II twin spindle lathes
Let’s take a closer look at what the MAM72-35V and the PUMA 2100SY II have to offer for prototype machining and production machining projects.
MAM72-35V 5-Axis Vertical Machining Center – Unmatched accuracy, productivity, and flexibility
Our MAM72-35V is the machine of choice for complex, high-precision parts requiring multi-sided or simultaneous 5-axis milling. The MAM72-35V is our eighth 5-axis mill and our first that offers high-precision 5-axis machining. This takes our ability to machine complex parts (which was already impressive) to an even higher level.
High-precision 5-axis machining
To give you an idea of what “high-precision” means in the context of this machine. . . our other 5-axis machines boast an X, Y, Z positioning accuracy of around 0.0005” within a roughly 6” work cube. The MAM72-35V has a positioning accuracy of less than 0.0001” and repeatability better than .00005” over the full travel of the machine.
We have always made tight-tolerance and consistent parts, but some customer requirements were definitely pushing our limits before adding this machine. Now, our 5-axis machine shop can provide the tightest tolerance CNC machining with exceptional repeatability.
Pallet system and massive tool changer provide unmatched productivity
The MAM72-35V significantly improves our productivity for customers seeking prototype machining, production machining, or a combination of both. Equipped with a 32 pallet pool and a massive 330 tool changer, the MAM72-35V enables us to run both prototype parts and unattended production. The repeatability of the pallet system, high accuracy of the machine, and large number of tools allows us to switch quickly between jobs for any reason with no concern about part tolerance or finish.
Previously, if a job got held up for one reason or another—a common occurrence when making complex CNC machined parts in prototype quantities—the idle machine time would be devastating. It would cause a domino effect to ripple through our entire schedule and often cause delays on multiple orders. Now, if we’re working on a prototype part and run into a roadblock, we can move on to the next job or scheduled production work, and bounce back to the original job whenever we resolve the issue. This ensures we lose almost no overall productivity on the machine.
Flexibility multiplies productivity
The productivity of this integrated and highly accurate system is further boosted by the flexibility of quick-change workholding. After the installation of the machine, we spent the first couple of weeks modifying the stock pallets to accept quick-change RockLock workholding from 5th Axis. Standard vises and tooling is all modeled in our simulation software to ensure smooth transitions between jobs. This helps us balance prototype and production jobs on the same machine and even allows us to run several different production jobs unattended as needed.
This is the ideal solution for customers who want to move from prototype to production quickly. We can work on a single pallet to optimize a prototype part for production machining. While waiting for customer approval we are able to work on other jobs. When production is approved, we can set up as many pallets as we need with standardized workholding and be running production within hours.
This is also a great option for part families and repeat production machining orders. If a customer has an assembly that requires multiple parts, or a family of parts that they require on a regular basis, we can quickly switch between parts with minimal changeover time while the machine is running.
PUMA 2100SY II Y-Axis Horizontal Turning Center
With the purchase of three new automated PUMA 2100SY II lathes, we were able to replace five of our older machines with standardized, accurate, versatile, and highly productive CNC lathes. These machines enable us to get more work done in less time, while adding substantial capacity and redundancy for larger bar work up to 2.625” diameter. The PUMA 2100SY II lathes use box way construction to provide exceptional rigidity and accuracy for machining complex, tight tolerance turned parts in any material. Here are some of the key specifications:
- 2.625” bar capacity (and small parts down to 0.5” in diameter)
- 12” turning capacity for chucked parts
- 20” maximum turn length
- Dual spindle
- High-speed BMT65P live tooling and Y-axis
- Glass scales and thermal compensation for sub .0001” repeatability
To further increase the versatility of these awesome lathes, we invested in enough high-speed live tooling to ensure that we can perform complex milling operations. Many lathes have some live tooling, but we have enough to complete the most complex turn-mill parts in one operation. We can almost call these machines CNC mills with bar feeders.
We’re Prepared to Take On Your Prototype Machining and Production Machining Projects
With an excellent 2022 behind us, Wagner Machine is excited to see what 2023 has in store. We’ve got the equipment, the capabilities, and the expertise to take on whatever project you send our way—no matter how complex.
